It can be easy to miss, but each Gospel writer is trying to bring one large truth to light, namely that Jesus is the King, and the cross his coronation. The imagery is thick; the crown of thorns, the purple robe, and being "lifted up" are each signposts to the idea that the cross was indeed the coronation of Jesus as King.  But Jesus is unlike any king before him, or any that would come after.
